Health Expression Anyone?

At Functional Health, we believe a common cold and fever is more than an inconvenience.  We embrace it as our body expressing health and therefore an opportunity for growth! We call it a Health Expression – or as a fellow Functional member has recently renamed it, a Health Experience! Either way … I hear you say …. Hmmm?!? Humour me for a moment. Your body is presented with an immune challenge – be it a bacteria, virus or STRESS.  The immune response is to call an increase of immune cells to the immune centers (lymph nodes, tonsils, thymus, spleen and bone

Functional Steps in Developing our Circle of Influence

Whether conscious of it or not, we are always influencing those around us and those around us are influencing us.  At home within our family, socially with our friends, amongst our work colleagues, all day, every day we are all having an impact on one another.  The question is … Is the quality of people that we choose to surround ourselves with, those who we would like to be influenced by? 1.  Identifying the Influence: You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? Functional Moving!

Movement is LIFE!  It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s winter.  It’s the perfect time to remind us how important movement is.  Whether it’s setting a timer on your desk and getting up every 30 minutes to do some simple stretches; signing up for the yoga or Pilates class;  jumping in the pool or rugging up and getting outdoors … our brain and nervous system thrive on movement. 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by movement of the spine  (Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize winner for brain research.)  If you are looking for a daily spinal stretch regime check out this one endorsed by the

Who is the Real Healer in All of This?

Who is the Real Healer in all of this? I recently stepped out of Functional Health (for the first time) and enjoyed a 4-week business/holiday with James visiting Australia, Italy and France. Not only was this break an opportunity for learning but also for us to relax and restore. But it also allowed me to trust in the process of “letting go” and come to the all important realisation that Functional Health (and the world for that matter) will (low and behold) continue on smoothly without me!!! My little wake up call and gentle ego nudge, is a wonderful reminder to us

Functional PLAY for the growing brain …

Functional PLAY for the growing brain …  A nourishing play environment is essential for child development.  Motions such as spinning, rocking and swinging are great ways to get the brain firing.  These motions activate the balance centers, increases motor tone, enriches coordination,  stimulates brain growth, encourages cognitive development … oh and they are fun! Spinning:  Begin spinning play at 12-14 months.  Sit and spin toys are great or placing the lil one on your lap and spinning on a desk chair (be sure to do it both ways).  At the park, look for the spin toys (not as common anymore, unfortunately).
